More and more people are skipping Google and asking ChatGPT, Gemini, or Copilot instead. Back then, the conclusion was clear: “Until AI platforms open up for ads, marketers need to cover every other channel.”

That sentence no longer holds. Since August 24, ChatGPT has been showing ads in Germany too, and since early September, advertisers have been able to book them via self-service. This opens up a new channel and, with it, a set of questions that will shape marketing strategies in the months ahead.

What actually changes with ChatGPT Ads

Ads in ChatGPT appear directly within the conversation. They are clearly labeled and visually separated from the answers. Campaigns are managed in OpenAI’s Ads Manager, and the logic will feel familiar to anyone who has worked with Google Ads or Meta: campaign, budget, objective, creatives, reporting. The barrier to entry is low as well: small test budgets are enough to get started.

So the real novelty is the environment. ChatGPT is used every day by a steadily growing user base, in situations where people actively ask questions and work toward decisions. That makes it a structurally new advertising environment, fundamentally different from anything search advertising or social media has offered so far.

From Search Term to Situation

In classic SEA, everything revolves around a search term. Anyone searching for “cheap office chairs Munich” sees ads for exactly that term. Intent is boiled down to a few words, and all the surrounding context is left out.

ChatGPT works differently. Users describe entire situations: what they need, their budget, their constraints, the alternatives they’ve already looked at. The ad system analyzes this context and can serve ads that fit the actual situation, based on the whole conversation rather than a single search term.

For search marketers, this is a break with established habits. For programmatic marketers, it’s familiar territory: at its core, this is contextual targeting, except that an AI interprets the conversation instead of matching keyword lists and categories.

Here’s how targeting in ChatGPT works. At campaign level, you set the country where your ads should appear. At ad group level, you use so-called Context Hints: descriptions of topics, situations, or questions where your offering could be relevant. Context Hints don’t work like exact-match keywords and don’t guarantee delivery in any specific conversation. Instead, they point the system in a direction. OpenAI makes the final call based on the full conversational context.

Demographic audiences and interest segments are deliberately not available. Moving from the familiar “Who do we want to reach?” to “Which situations do we want to show up in?” takes some getting used to. But in a conversational environment, it makes sense.

For creatives, this calls for a rethink. An ad that appears in a conversation has to pick up the thread, not break it. Standard display messaging doesn’t work here. Instead, ads need to connect to what the user is researching. On top of that, the system evaluates not only the Context Hints but also the ad headline, ad copy, and landing page. The landing page itself becomes a targeting signal. Anyone who learns now how prompts turn into impressions and how messaging performs in a conversational context is building experience that will pay off in the years ahead.

Why B2B stands to benefit most

In B2B, a purchase decision rarely starts with a clear-cut Google search. It starts with an open question. Which software solution fits a company our size? What should we look for when choosing a new supplier? How do other companies approach a particular topic, and which vendors are worth considering?

These are exactly the kinds of questions people increasingly ask ChatGPT. Users are in the consideration phase: they compare, weigh their options, and form early preferences, often long before they first contact a vendor. Display and CTV reach this moment only indirectly, through awareness built earlier, while SEA usually kicks in only once the search gets specific.

Brands that are visible at this stage have a good chance of making the shortlist before the actual vendor comparison even begins. And because B2B decisions rarely happen on the spot and instead take shape over weeks or months, this creates significantly more touchpoints than a classic search funnel.

For context, there is one caveat: ads only appear in the Free and Go plans, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu remain ad-free. How much of a B2B audience can actually be reached will therefore only become clear through a properly measured test.

Where ChatGPT Ads Fit in the Mix

ChatGPT Ads are not a replacement for programmatic, paid social, or classic search ads. The channel fills a gap in the upper and middle funnel that has been hard to address until now: the research and decision-making phase, when users are actively looking for information but haven’t yet formed a concrete purchase intent.

As part of an omnichannel strategy, the channel can turn awareness built through display and CTV into concrete consideration moments. Once users click through to your landing page, they flow into existing retargeting sequences on other channels. Brands that start testing early gain first learnings on messaging and audience, and build experience with auction mechanics that will keep evolving over the coming months.

What matters is building ChatGPT Ads into the strategy from the start rather than testing them in isolation.

That’s where we come in at EuroDSP. We handle the setup, management, and optimization of ChatGPT campaigns and integrate them into your existing programmatic, social, and search strategy. The result is a cohesive mix in which every channel plays its part and none runs on its own.

Curious how ChatGPT Ads could fit into your strategy? Let’s set up your first test together.

Advertising in ChatGPT is now live in Germany.
